Thanks for the heads up on the above I have edited.
Also I have contacted Garmin and I have sent them Express log and XML file but they take an age to reply hopefully they will reply before I go to the south of france.

................ new to Garmin, I have looked at the latest map link on this site but there seems to be a lot
of different files and with some more than one file with the same name so If someone could point me in the right direction that would be good.

Well Dell, [ha ha], if you only want France or just Southern part of it even, I can upload an unlocked image just for it to the 2015.10 map thread. Just let me know here or by PM. As to the other files you'll need for your 3490, that's easy:

All the SID files.

3D map for Buildings/Landmarks [take the unlocked version]. Not necessary but nice to have.

JCV file: Take D3048150A.JCV [that's the largest 212*234 picture size file, the other is for 30/4x etc nuvi series]

db file for SQLite folder.

If you want to use Voice Command, you'll also need the ASR files. I don't think they've been posted but I do have them. The only catch is that you can't use them with just a partial map [e.g. UK, France or indeed even with any part of EU missing], so you would have to load the entire EU image.

Thanks for the offer Buddyboy but I have already updated it through the back door but the main point of the thread is that if it should be free and legal then I should be able to update it .
I am used to doing it on tomtom but not on Garmin but I got there in the end, I just thought someone else may have had the same problem but is seems not .
